Acne and Diet: The Surprising Foods That Were Ruining My Skin

big girl

Acne has been my constant struggle, even while I was growing up. Back then, I had no clue why my skin was always breaking out. Growing up, acne was a constant struggle for me. At the time, I didn’t understand why my skin was always breaking out. Mostly, I assumed it was because I had “bad skin” or bad luck. Looking back now, I realize it was pretty clear that my diet was awful.

Like any other teen, I used to love fast food. McDonald’s fries were my go-to comfort food. And when could I ever say no to fried chicken? My water intake was very low, and vegetables were practically nonexistent in my meals. Meat, grease, and processed food were what I lived on, and never was I able to solve the puzzle that connected my poor eating habits and my acne-prone skin.

But as time passed on and after a lot of experimentation, I have come to be more observant and mindful about the things that I am consuming and how they will directly impact my skin.

Yes, Skincare Is Important — But So Is What You Eat

If you, too, like me, have been struggling with acne-prone skin, then you would understand the skincare product cycle of trying new products in high hopes that something will finally work. I have dealt with that too. But relief came with the greatest realizations that what you eat is just as important as other products you apply to your face.

Spicy food has been one of the greatest causes. I could guarantee having a breakout tomorrow if I had something spicy today. However, this doesn’t go the same for everyone. Only if you have acne-prone skin, your diet could be the hidden trigger for the stubborn breakouts.

Foods That May Trigger Acne

Different people’s skin reacts differently to the things that you consume. Yet, in my personal experience and research, I have found that there are certain acne-triggering foods to look out for:

  • Fried foods & greasy fast food
They can heighten inflammation and sebum production- a major cause for clogged pores.
  • Spicy foods
Can lead to inflammation and flare-ups for some people (myself included!).
  • Dairy
Milk, in particular, has hormones that can mess with your own hormones and even spark acne.
  • Sugary snacks & refined carbs
They might cause a sudden rise in insulin levels, which can play badly with your acne.
  • Lack of water & fiber
Dehydrated skin and poor digestion can both contribute to breakouts.

My Skincare Journey: What Didn’t Work vs. What Finally Did

Like most people, I too tried a lot of acne products during my teenage years. I remember trying Proactiv, which contains benzoyl peroxide. Unfortunately, my skin felt extremely dry and irritated after every use, and somehow, it increased my breakouts too. I had started to feel hopeless, losing confidence, thinking that I did not have any control over my skin.

But over time, I stopped relying on random products and began my own research. It’s during this time that I learned about other ingredients, like AHA, BHA, and PHA, and how each one of them affected the skin. Slowly, I researched and understood how my skin was reacting to different percentages, for example, how a 2% AHA feels compared to a 4% AHA, and learning about which combination of ingredients my skin could handle and which it couldn’t.

Products That Actually Worked For Me

So, after this long journey, I have found a few skincare gems that have really made a difference:

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Acne Treatment Hydrating Lotion

This has been my go-to acne treatment for quite some time. The formula is very gentle and doesn’t dry out my skin. It is quite effective in reducing inflammation and minimizing breakouts. Finally, what I really love about it? It has no artificial and harsh scent. Just pure goodness.

Lancôme Clarifique Pore Cleansing Foam

The power ingredient of this cleanser is salicylic acid, which is known to help in deep cleansing and refining the pores. In addition, it also has a mild and relaxing scent, which soothes your mind too, making up for a relaxing skincare routine. The results? Brownie points for making my skin look brighter and even-toned after each use.

Final Thoughts: Acne Is Multifaceted

If you, too, have been struggling with acne, know that you’re not alone, and it’s never completely about using the right cleanser or spot treatment. Diet turned out to be the missing piece of the jigsaw for me. Although it did take me a little time to get all of this sorted but once I did, everything started falling into place.

However, keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different; what may work right for me might not work the best for you. But this is what I have learned in my struggle: pay attention to your body. Pay heed to the patterns; breakouts aren’t random, they are always connected to something. It could be something you ate, or drank, or any product that you might have used.

A clearer-looking skin is just around the corner! All it takes is a little time, patience, and the curiosity to figure out what your skin might need.
